Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to a number of processes available for settling disputes other than traditional litigation in the public courts.
Two primary processes of ADR are mediation and arbitration. Mediation uses a neutral third party to facilitate negotiations among conflicting parties to promote a settlement. Arbitration is a process by which a mutually-agreed third party is selected, and after hearing evidence from all parties, the arbitrator decides the outcome of the dispute.
